Upward Bound Logo

Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits.

Upward Bound serves:
•high school students from low-income families
•high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree.

The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.


Upward Bound serves the following schools in Lauderdale and Colbert Counties in northwest Alabama.
•Brooks High School
•Central High School
•Cherokee High School
•Colbert County High School
•Florence Freshman Center
•Florence High School
•Lauderdale County High School
•Lexington High School
•Rogers High School
•Waterloo High School
•Wilson High School



What should I expect out of the program during the regular school year?

1. Weekly tutoring sessions at your high school.
2. Individual, Group, Career, and Academic Advising.
3. Saturday visits to Northwest-Shoals Community College, Shoals Campus for workshops on values, careers, and study skills.
4. Field trips to places of educational, recreational, or cultural interest.
5. Transportation and lunches furnished on campus and on all scheduled trips.
6. Pay!! $8.00 for each week student participates.

What should I expect out of the program during the Summer component?

1. Live in dormitories at Northwest-Shoals Community College, Shoals Campus, 5 weeks.
2. Individual tutoring and academic advising.
3. College level courses (tuition paid).
4. Field Trips.
5. Athletics and group activities.
6. Most transportation and all meals furnished on scheduled trips.
7. Year-end 2 to 3 day educational / recreational / cultural trip.
8. More pay!! $8.00 per week.
