Kristy Ward, Head Coach
Women's Basketball

Kristy Ward has elevated Northwest-Shoals women's basketball program to a point where competing for a state championship is no longer good enough. Her guidance over the last twelve seasons has raised the bar for the Patriot teams. Now they enter each season with the expectations to win the state title, and move on to test the Nations elite in the National Tournament. "Our goal is to have a program that when we do not win the state tournament, we consider it an off year," Ward said. "That's not realistic every year, but we want the players coming in to our program expecting that type of success." Ward's NW-SCC teams have been the envy among sister institutions in the state. been known for producing explosive offensive performances and have ranked among the Nations best in averaging points per game. More importantly, her teams also have been known as being among the most successful. Her twelve squads have produced a 294-110 record for a winning percentage of .72.

Ward began her coaching experience in the 93-94 season as an assistant coach at Coffee High School in Florence . She was named women's assistant coach at Northwest Shoals Community College for the 94-95 season. She assumed the head coaching position the following year.

Ward graduated from Cullman High School in Cullman, AL. She played basketball and volleyball at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Al for two seasons, while earning an associates degree. She then went on to the University of North Alabama where she received her bachelor degree while playing basketball for the Lions. Ward completed her master's degree and Administrative Certification at the University of North Alabama. She has completed her degree in the Educational Specialist Program and currently is working toward her Doctorate.

Shayla Franklin,
Assistant Women's Basketball Coach

Shayla Franklin, returning to her Alma Mater at Northwest-Shoals, is entering into her fifth season with the Patriots. Since joining the Patriots, she has been and will continue to be an asset on and off the floor for the women's basketball program.

Franklin is from Sylacauga , AL a graduate of Sylacauga High School where she lettered in basketball and track. Shayla played on Ward's first state championship team in 95-96 at NW-SCC while earning her associates degree. She then went on to the University of Southern Mississippi where she earned her bachelor's degree in coaching and sports administration while playing for the Golden Eagles.
