Program Description

Cosmetology is the art and science of beauty care. A student in cosmetology learns basic skills and related knowledge in hairstyling, nail care, chemical services and skin care. Personal development and professional ethics are included in the curriculum. The curriculum is designed for students to meet the needs of a changing society by helping the individual acquire skills, knowledge, understanding, and attitudes which will contribute to his/her prociciency and competency in the occupation.

When the student has completed the curriculum outline of three semesters, he/she is eligible to make application for examination by the Alabama Board of Cosmetology. After passing the written and practical examination, the student becomes licensed and is eligible for employment.

A part-time program is designed to meet the needs of anyone who cannot attend the full-time program. Skills and related theory are included. Students wishing to practice cosmetology must meet licensing requirements set by the Alabama State Board of Cosmetology.

Entering students are required to complete ORT100. Transfer students are exempt from this requirement.

A High School diploma or GED certificate is not required for admission to this program. Students must be at least 16

Transfer Credit: Students may receive up to one semester for clock hours and credit hours earned at another school.
