Program Description

This certificate is designed for training capable individuals who desire to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN). The Practical Nursing program enables the student to obtain the skills and knowledge leading to employment in the health care field. Topics related to safe, knowledgeable, and efficient nursing care are included. The certificate is approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing. Graduates are eligible to apply to take the state licensing examination (NCLEX-PN) for licensure as Practical Nurses. Graduation from the program however, does not guarantee Board of Nursing approval to take the NCLEX-PN licensing examination. The Practical Nursing Plan is three semesters in length. Students are admitted in the Fall semester. The admission criteria is currently under review and is subject to change.

Students are admitted according to the following priority:

  • First time students
  • Re-admissions
  • Transfer students with previous nursing education

Entering students are required to complete ORI101. Transfer students are exempt from this requirement.

Prospective students must meet the general requirements for admission to the College, be 17 years of age or older and score at least 36 on each area of ASSET or comparable compass or ACT scores. Students are required to have a High School or GED certificate.

PRACTICAL NURSING GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum admission standards for Practical Nursing include:

  • Unconditional admission to the college.
  • Receipt of completed application for the Practical Nursing Program by April 1 for the fall admission annually.
  • Have a minimum of 2.50 cumulative grade point average based on the most recent 24 credit hours of college work.
  • Eligibility for ENG101, MTH116, MTH100 (Intermediate College Algebra) or higher as determined by college policy.
  • Good standing with the college.
  • Have taken the TEASV and have official scores on file in the NW-SCC nursing office by application deadline. Test must have been completed within the last three years prior to the application deadline.
  • Meeting the essential functions or technical standards required for nursing. (See Essentail Functions in Registered Nursing section of the catalog.)

Admission to the PN program is competitive. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.
The College reserves the right to adjust requirements or use additional criteria to determine admission.
