WELCOME TO MTH 098 - Elementary
College Algebra
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is a review of the fundamental operations in arithmetic and algebra. The topics include the numbers of ordinary arithmetic and their properties; integers and rational numbers; solving equations; polynomials and factoring; and an introduction to systems of equations and graphs. This course does not apply toward the general core requirements for mathematics. PRE-REQUISITE(S): MTH 090 or appropriate mathematics placement score. CO-REQUISITE(S): None REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS: Beginning Algebra, 9th edition, Margaret Lial, John Hornsby, and Terry McGinnis, Addison-Wesley, 2004 SUPPLIES: A simple calculator is very useful for completing some assignments, and graph paper is helpful for preparing and analyzing graphs. RECOMMENDED TEXTBOOK/SUPPLEMENTS: Videos that accompany the textbook are available from the Math Department or the Library for checkout. Video instruction may also air on Comcast Channel 59. Students are encouraged, but not required, to watch these programs when broadcast. Under no circumstances should the student record these programs. The web site www.coursecompass.com is also available for use by students to provide additional instruction.
