What is Student Support Services?

Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded program through the U.S. Department of Education designed to assist qualified students in their postsecondary education. SSS offers these students courses in developmental writing and algebra.  Enrollment in these classes is based on placement tests, recommendations from instructors, and/or individual requests.  For SSS participants who plan to transfer to a four-year institution, the Transfer/Initiative Program is available to furnish information about financial aid, programs of study, and course transferability.  SSS offers peer and professional group tutoring in selected courses.  Student Support Services also provides grant aid to a limited number of current participants who are also receiving federal pell grants.  Student Support Services is committed to assisting students in their educational goals.

Developmental Classes

Student Support Services offers courses in developmental writing and algebra. These individualized courses offer a review in basic writing and grammar and teach fundamental algebraic operations.  The developmental classes allow students to improve their basic skills, gain confidence in their abilities, and adjust to the demands of a college schedule before enrolling in the more rigorous college level courses.

Tutoring

Tutoring provides reinforcement of classwork and class assignments, assistance with remediation of background material, and successful learning and study strategies.  Tutoring is designed to supplement classroom instruction and help students remain successful as they continue their college careers.  SSS offers both peer and professional group tutoring in select areas to those students who need academic or technical assistance.  For further information on tutoring services available, contact the Student Support Services office on either campus.

Transfer/Initiative Program

The Transfer/Initiative Program assists students who wish to transfer from NW-SCC to a four-year college or university.  The program provides help with choosing a major program of study to ensure classes will transfer to four-year institutions.  The counselor usually serves as the advisor for the participants.  Admissions and scholarship information from four-year schools is provided by the program counselor. Two transfer/financial aid seminars are held each year.  Six campus visits to universities are planned each year.  In addition, cultural activities are also included with each campus visit.  Several workshops designed to promote success in the classroom are provided throughout the year.
